Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery is the umbrella term for a range of procedures that can restore and reshape your body. The term is relatively broad, and there is a common misconception that “plastic” means artificial – you are not alone in this assumption. However, the word is derived from the Greek plastikos, which means to mould or create form. Based on this information, we can see where this type of surgery got its name.
Types of Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery can be broken into two schools; reconstructive and aesthetic (or cosmetic) procedures:
Reconstructive plastic surgery is done to correct, or rather, reconstruct parts of the body that was affected by;
- Birth defects
- Diseases and infections
- Trauma
- Tumours
The main difference between reconstructive and cosmetic surgery is that the former is done to improve or restore function, even if it can enhance your appearance. Cosmetic surgery, on the other hand, is only done to enhance and improve an otherwise
fully-functional feature for the sake of aesthetics. Cosmetic options are extensive and ever improving.
The Rewards of Plastic Surgery
Aside from the obvious benefit of enhancing your appearance, often times the benefit of plastic surgery is psychological. The correction of a perceived “problem” by a patient can make them feel less vulnerable and improve their confidence by leaps and bounds. This newfound confidence can spill into all other areas of life for the better, professionally and socially as you show off your new, flattering features. When you feel positive in your own skin, you radiate confidence that resonates
through everything you do.
Risk of Plastic Surgery
Naturally, going under the knife comes with some risk. We often see botched plastic surgery shows, and unfortunately, these shows are not far-fetched or fictional. It is therefore imperative to find a qualified and certified surgeon with good reviews before you commit to the procedure. Risks can include:
- Infection
- Excessive bleed
- Blood clots
- Nerve damage or loss of sensation
- Tissue necrosis
When a surgery is unsuccessful, it can have devasting effects on patients. Unsatisfactory results can include scarring, asymmetrical results and contour irregularities.
Weigh the Risk Vs Rewards
Plastic surgery can be very rewarding, if successful. Many patient success stories testify to a regret of not having the surgery sooner. That said, altering your appearance is a lifelong commitment that requires extensive research to find the perfect surgeon for the job.
