How to Decide if Liposuction is Right for You

You may be wondering if liposuction is for you. Is it worth the price? Well, numbers indicate the vast majority of people who have had liposuction are extremely happy with the results.

Are You a Good Liposuction Candidate?

You’ll only get the most out of your money if you’re a good candidate for liposuction. You should be in good health and should be eating right and exercising regularly. Liposuction won’t help you to lose weight so it is important that you are comfortable with your weight and are ideally at your target weight before the procedure.

Is Liposuction the Ideal Procedure for You?

For the right patient, liposuction can offer highly positive results. This procedure combined with diet and exercise can treat resistant fat almost anywhere on the body, as well as some portions of the face. It is important to have realistic expectations when considering any cosmetic procedure. Liposuction is not going to help you lose weight. It can take loose skin that’s left over after weight loss or pregnancy and fix it Will

You Work to Maintain the Results?

Regardless of how happy you are with your liposuction results; you must work to maintain them. A proper diet and regular exercise are necessary to protect the results of liposuction It is important to understand and be prepared to make this commitment before having liposuction or you are just wasting your money. You May Be a Good Candidate for Liposuction If
You are at a healthy weight –In order to be a candidate for liposuction, you must have a BMI of under 30 and if you are in the process of losing weight, be about 15 pounds from your goal.

You exercise & maintain a healthy diet – Liposuction is not a shortcut to your ideal body shape or a substitute for diet and exercise. While the procedure does remove fat cells in the targeted area, the remaining cells can get larger if weight gain occurs. You are not a smoker – Tobacco use can increase the risk for complications during and after surgery. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, causes vasoconstriction or the blood vessels which causes an increased risk of complications.

You Have Realistic Expectations & Goals – Liposuction is not a magic bullet. You need to be realistic about your results and what you can achieve. You May Not Be a Good Candidate for Liposuction If
You have loose skin – Skin loses elasticity as we age so well liposuction can be performed on men and women of any age, the best results are seen in younger patients with good skin tone and elasticity.

You’re hoping to get rid of cellulite – Liposuction is not a solution for eliminating cellulite. In some cases, liposuction can worsen the appearance of cellulite by removing the cushion of fat underneath the skin, causing additional dimpling. You Take Anticoagulants – Individuals who take anticoagulant medication or other drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding, such as aspirin or NSAIDs, are unlikely to be good candidates for liposuction.

You Have A Serious, Chronic Health Condition – Undergoing liposuction with a life- threatening illness or serious medical condition increases the risk of complications and can impair healing. As with any medical procedure, it is better to be in the best health possible. Talk to you doctor and ensure a complete medical history and physical exam are done before you have any cosmetic procedures done by Board-certified surgeons.

We hope we have managed to provide you with some useful but basic information on liposuction. Remember to always do your research and ensure your surgeon is a Board- certified plastic or cosmetic surgeon. Nothing beats your health and safety!

Nine Facts You Should Know About Liposuction

Liposuction is a common cosmetic surgery involving the removal of stubborn, bothersome fat cells that have accumulated under the skin in various parts of the body. This procedure takes anywhere between one to three hours long and can give you visible, instant results that make your figure more proportionate and beautiful. If you do choose liposuction, it is important to do your research and be armed with some basic facts to help you make the right decision and fully know what to expect.

Here are nine liposuction facts you really should know:

1. The results are long-lasting:

It is good for adult bodies that they can’t generate new fat calls. This makes the results of liposuction permanent. You should be aware that liposuction does not remove all fat cells from the suctioned area. This is important because the remaining cells can start growing again if you do not eat healthy and exercise.

2. This procedure has more than one name

Liposuction is just of the many names attributed to this popular procedure that contours and sculpts your body by getting rid of fat from problem areas. Liposuction also goes by the names liposculpture, lipectomy, lipoplasty, or just lipo.

3. Liposuction is Not for Weight Loss

You will lose some weight with liposuction but it is not a weight loss surgery and you should not expect to reach your ideal weight through liposuction. This procedure improves your body contour and proportions by targeting specific problem areas for fat removal. Liposuction can be very helpful in situations were dieting and exercising might not help, such as fatty pockets on the inner thighs or hips.

4. General or local anesthesia may be used

Your surgeon will decide whether to use a local or general anesthetic depending on the areas you are targeting and how extensive your surgery is. Smaller procedures usually only require local anesthetic and in some cases, patients may be asked to stand up during part of the procedure. More complex procedures or ones where multiple areas of the body are involved usually require a general anesthetic. It is important to remember you can not operate heavy machinery, include a motor vehicle, for 24 hours after anesthetic.

5. It is Also Effective for Men

Traditionally, liposuction has been more popular amongst women but this is changing and more men have the procedure done. Men commonly treat love handles, waist, chin, and fatty tissue in the chest with liposuction.

6. The Absorbed Fat Can Be Reused

When you have liposuction, it is possible to remove the problem fat from one area and reuse it in another. That’s right! Your extracted fat cells can be transplanted into another part of your body, including your face or backside,, to help give you a youthful lift.

7. It Can Help You Resolve Edema Conditions

Edema is a swelling condition caused by the build up of lymph tissue in the extremities. Surprisingly, liposuction can be used to help stop this problem.

8. One of the Most Performed Cosmetic Surgeries in the World

While breast augmentation is the most common performed cosmetic procedure, liposuction is a close
second. Thanks to the introduction of new technologies that have made liposuction more effective, safer, and resulted in less recovery time, it has become more popular with patients and people notice the changes it can make to one’s figure and how long-lasting it is.

9. Anti-cellulite lotions and cryolipolysis can’t replace liposuction

Liposuction is the only method to remove excess fatty tissue from under the skin. Lotions and cryolipolysis simply cannot get at the fat deep within cells. It won’t work because iti cannot reach the cells under your skin.

We hope this little primer on the basic facts of liposuction have helped. As always, remember to do your research and make sure your surgeon is Board-certified before undergoing any procedure. Liposuction can help you get your shape back but it isn’t acure all. A healthy diet and exercise will be needs to maintain results but no one ever said looking good was easy!

Tumescent Liposuction: Everything You Need to Know

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that contours and removes stubborn fat deposits from areas of the body that don't change with diet and exercise. The most popular form of liposuction is tumescent liposuction because it is safe and less painful, more effective, and have a quicker recovery time than traditional liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is done on an out-patient basis and does not require general anesthesia.

It is important to know that tumescent liposuction can safely remove fat from almost all parts of the body, including the face, chin, neck, stomach, breasts, flanks, back, hips,. thighs, knees, buttocks, calves, and ankles. Tumescent liposuction is commonly used to remove lipomas, or benign fatty tissue tumours, as well as being used to treat excessive underarm sweating and enlarged male and female breasts.

Preparation

When you consider tumescent liposuction, you will meet with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. You will discuss your goals and determine whether tumescent liposuction is the best way to achieve your goals. Ensure your surgeon is Board-certified. The doctor wille examine you and do a complete medical history. Photos should be taken of before and after to measure your results.

If you decide to have tumescent liposuction, your doctor will give you specific instructions to follow before surgery. Your surgeon will review any medications you take regularly, including nutritional and herbal supplements, and tell you when to stop taking them before surgery.

Other instructions may include:

It is very important you do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. You can take any necessary medication with a small sip of water but that is all.

If you smoke, you need to stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery, as smoking can hinder wound healing.

Always wear loose-fitting clothing that opens in the front or is easy to remove over your head. Remember you will have a fair bit of swelling to begin with.

To avoid ingrown hairs, do not shave or remove hair near the areas to be contoured the day of surgery.

Procedure

In tumescent liposuction, a solution containing a local anesthetic and drug called epinephrine are injected into the targeted areas of excessive fatty deposits. This solution then fills the fatty layers of the skin, causing it to swell and become firmer. This will allow your surgeon to have better control while contouring the area in question. This saline and epinephrine solution is used as it causes blood vessels to temporarily shrink.

This is done as it greatly reduces blood loss during the procedure and reduces bruising, swelling, and pain after the procedure.

Once the solution is injected, your surgeon will make a tiny incision in your skin and inserts a cannula which is a small, skinny tube connected to a vacuum-like machine into the fatty layer of tissue. By using back and forth movements, the fat is then sucked through the tube into a sterile collection system. An elastic compression garment is used after the procedure as compression has been shown to helps the skin contract and heal.

Recovery

The local anesthetic injected into the fatty tissue lasts for about 24 hours following surgery. Local anesthetic is wonderful as it greatly minimizes postoperative pain. When this wears off, most patients usually just need Tylenol to manage their pain.

After Tumescent liposuction, the majority of patients are alert and able to function without nausea or grogginess. You will be encouraged to walk immediately after the surgery to improve your healing. You can return to regular exercise three to seven days after the procedure. Provided your work doesn’t include heavy lifting you can likely return to work after a few days.

Most of the swelling goes down in a few days. Although you will see improvement within one to two weeks, it takes at least three to four months, and in some cases as long as six months, to see the treatment’s full benefit.

Risks

Like all surgery, tumescent liposuction carries both benefits and risks. Complications are rare and typically minor. The most common include skin irregularity, lumpiness, dimpling, loose skin, numbness, infections and scarring. If these do occur, they can be easily corrected in most cases.

The frequency of complications is significantly reduced when the procedure is performed by a qualified and well-trained dermatologic or plastic surgeon.

A History a Liposuction

Everyone is familiar with unwanted pockets of stubborn fat. It doesn’t matter if you eat right and exercise daily, there is no promise that fat will go away. Liposuction can target and remove unwanted body fat, which allows you to look slimmer, trimmer, and fitter. It’s an ideal solution for those last bits of stubborn fat that just won’t go away.

Liposuction has a truly fascinating and widely unknown history. The precursors to liposuction actually date back nearly 100 years, starting in the 1920s when French plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Dujarier first introduced the concept of body contouring via fat removal. He preformed the first precursor surgery to liposuction in 1926 by removing fat from the knees of a model/dancer.

Rather sadly for the patient, Dr. Dujarier removed too much fat and his sutures were too tight. This resulted in gangrene setting in and the patient’s leg having to be amputated. It would take decades of work to start refining the procedure and techniques would improve.

In the 1960s, European surgeons tried to cut away portions of unwanted fat in patients but these procedures often resulted in a lot of bleeding and scarring. In order to limit the risks to patients, surgeons would only perform these early fat removal surgeries on parts of the body without too many blood vessels.

There were some major changes that occurred in the 1970s. Originally, the procedure was done by removing fat with curettes. This method, known as curettage, was inconsistent. Fast forward to 1974 and the father and son team of Dr. Arpad Fischer and Sr. Giorgio Fischer developed a tool known as the cannula. A cannula is a hollow tube that allows surgeons to bypass blood vessels while suctioning out unwanted fat. Thanks to the Fischers, liposuction as we know it was born although the procedure was initially only performed on thighs.

In the late 1970s, French plastic surgeons Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz and Dr. Pierre Fournier built on the successes and techniques of the Fischers. The surgeons improved the design of the cannula and also developed a highly effective crisscross method for fat removal that improved the overall outcomes for patients. Another innovation of these French surgeons was to apply compression to the body after surgery to support the part of the body operated on. Illous and Fournier were utterly essential for the development of the “wet technique” in liposuction. The wet technique simply means that a saline solution (salt water) is injected into the treatment area prior to liposuction being performed. This makes fat removal easier and helps reduce bleeding.

Dr. Fournier also pioneering the use of lidocaine (a local anesthetic) during the wet technique to reduce discomfort during liposuction. All of this set the stage for tumescent liposuction, a procedure fine tuned by California dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein. Tumescent liposuction uses saline solution, lidocaine and epinephrine, which helps shrink capillaries. These are injected into the area being worked on as it makes the fat easier to remove, reduces discomfort during treatment, minimized bleeding, and helps prevent excessive bruising.

The ‘90s saw new innovations with the use of ultrasonic assisted liposuction, or UAL. UAL was\ developed by Italian professor Michele Zocchi in 1992. This procedure involves the application of ultrasonic energy during liposuction to help remove fat without damaging surrounding nerve tissue. PAL was approved for use in 1998, which involves a cannula that pulses during the procedure to help break up fat. PAL, or power assisted liposuction, features devices that are easier for surgeons to control, allowing for more precise and thorough fat removal. These devices produce rapid, small vibrations to break up fat so that it can easily be suctioned out through the cannula.

We hope this brief history of liposuction has given you a better understanding of this cosmetic procedure. If you are considering liposuction, always do your research, ensure your surgeon is Board-certified, and follow all post-op recovery instructions. Liposuction can help sculpt your body and give you a trim figure.

Five Surprising Facts About Liposuction

1. Liposuction Is Not for Obese People

“Liposuction” is simply a medical word for fat removal. It is important to understand it’s not a treatment for weight loss or obesity. In order for someone to be considered a good candidate for liposuction, they should be within 30% of their ideal body weight. Liposuction is a procedure that removes fat deposits that have not responded to exercise and diet. This type of fat is more likely due to genes than lifestyle and is therefore very difficult to get rid of without surgical intervention. In order to properly benefit from a liposuction procedure, it is best to be fit, active, and a non smoker. As with any plastic surgery, you should discuss expectations with your doctor to make sure they are realistic.

2. Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists Perform Most Liposuctions

While we always recommend having a surgeon who should be a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the fact is, liposuction is most often performed by plastic surgeons and dermatologists, according to the FDA.

There are differences between the two and many procedures can only be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. So, what’s the difference? Well, a plastic surgeon specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery while a dermatologist specializes in treating conditions of the skin, hair and nails. Since almost any doctor can offer liposuction without completing standardized training, it is very important to do your research and be comfortable with your doctor. You deserve the best results so don’t be shy about getting a second opinion and always ask about the doctor’s training and experience.

3. Liposuction Works by Breaking Up Fat Deposits

During a liposuction procedure, your Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist will make a series of small incisions in the skin and inject a saltwater-based numbing medication along with a medication to control bleeding before fat removal. This type of procedure is called tumescent liposuction and it works by preventing excessive blood loss, swelling, and bruising.; all things a patient wants under control during a medical procedure. After injecting this mixture, the Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist will insert a hollow tube, (cannula), through the incisions and then uses it to break up fat deposits. A small surgical vacuum or syringe is used to suck out the fat through the cannula.

4. Lasers Help Break Up the Fat

There has been a number of new additions to liposuction over the years, including assisted liposuction with ultrasound or laser. Procedures with ultrasound or laser both liquefy the fat, making it easier to remove. This can help cut down on bruising and swelling and has the added bonus of helping to speed recovery. Ultrasound works differently and actually liquefies the fat with sound waves. These sound waves can be delivered either through the cannula or the skin. The laser heats the fat to liquefy it and importantly, it can also increase the amount of fat areas that can be treated during a single procedure.

5. It May Take a Few Months to See Your New Look

Everyone has seen the amazing before-and-after photos that show remarkable results, but it is important to remember and understand that results are not immediate. It is possible you will have to wear elastic bandages or compression garments after your procedure to help reduce swelling for days or even weeks. You may have drains inserted to help remove excess fluids and you may not see the final results for a few weeks or even months. You have to eat properly and exercise after liposuction because if you put on weight after the procedure, you will find that fat can show up in new and unpredictable places.

Liposuction is a common plastic surgery and we hope we have provided you with some new insight into this procedure. If you are considering having liposuction or any other plastic surgery procedure in the Miami area, you have your choice of some of the best Plastic Surgeons around but please remember to do your research and find a surgeon who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery
and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

What is Neck Lift Surgery

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck.

Neck lifts can be done for a variety of reasons but mainly to remove excess fat and relaxation in the lower face that creates jowls, remove excess fatty deposits under the chin, treat loose neck skin, and address muscle banding in the neck, which creates abnormal contours

As everyone knows, the aging process is hard on the body and face. The loss of youthful contours in the face and neck are caused by a variety of factors, including gravity, emotional conditions, heredity, and stress.

Many patients many not feel the need for a full-face lift as the skin on the upper face is still youthful looking. Many patients do complain of excess wrinkling of the neck skin, a double chin or "turkey wattle" and jowl lines. In these situations, where the neck area doesn’t match the rest of the upper face, a neck lift may be a good option.

There are several

rejuvenation procedures that can be performed in conjunction with a neck lift, including: fat transfer, to add fullness to the lips and cheeks and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, a brow lift, to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, or eyelid surgery, to rejuvenate aging eyes.

What neck lift surgery can't do

It is just as important to be aware of what neck lift surgery cannot do as what it can do. It is a restorative surgery, so it will not change your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process.

A neck lift can only be performed surgically by a board-certified surgeon. A board- certified plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which is the only board the American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes to certify doctors in the full range of plastic and reconstructive procedures.

It is important to note that nonsurgical rejuvenation treatments will not achieve the same results as a neck or face lift but can help delay the time at which a neck lift becomes appropriate.

Nonsurgical neck lift

For those who do not want full surgery but want to improve the aging appearance of their neck, there are a variety of nonsurgical procedures to choose from. Many of these nonsurgical options have the added benefit of a quicker recovery time and fewer risks.

Some additional non-surgical options include:

Dermal fillers can restore lost volume to the skin
Ultrasound technology can also stimulate collagen to improve fine lines and wrinkles.

Radiofrequency with micro-needling can also help rejuvenate the skin by stimulating the production of collagen

Kybella can break down fat cells

Fractionated laser treatment can be used to create textural improvements in the skin.
When it comes to neck rejuvenation surgery, there are plenty of options. If you are looking for a good plastic surgeon in the Miami-Dade area, make sure you do your research and find a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which is the only board the American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes to certify doctors in the full range of plastic and reconstructive procedures
